UDAAN - Beginning to Fly High

Excitement Mounts: The Countdown to the Unforgettable Event

The air buzzes with anticipation as the final rays of sunlight paint the classroom walls. One day remains until the grand culmination of a year's worth of exploration and discovery—the Passion Project-UDAAN. Students move about the room, their voices filled with a harmonious blend of excitement and nerves. The atmosphere is charged with energy, like a vibrant canvas awaiting its masterpiece.

The 25th of April 2023 had a distinctive morning. The day at school was not typical. There was a strong sense of commitment to excellence in the air. It was the day before the finale, the day on which our champions were going to soar. And they did so on 26th April 2023, a day which highlighted their true potential!

From Students to Artists: Claiming Our Creative Ownership

At VKE, we believe that education empowers students to take ownership of their learning and pursue their passions. That's why we have implemented a Passion Project initiative that allows our students to explore their interests and develop their ATL (Approaches to Learning) skills. And in 2022, we took this initiative to the next level by introducing UDAAN - a mini-exhibition of student passion projects that prepares them for their PYP 5 exhibition.

The name UDAAN was suggested by our grade 4 students, who were excited about the idea of exploring their own passion and exhibiting responsibility for their learning. UDAAN, which means "taking flight" in Hindi, perfectly captures the spirit of our passion project, where students can spread their wings and showcase their creativity and knowledge.

On the Road to Success: Students’ Commitment to the Journey

In UDAAN, students of PYP 4 presented their passion projects to an audience of parents, teachers, and fellow students. The projects covered a wide range of subject areas, from science experiments to art installations to community service initiatives. The students worked independently or in small groups, taking full ownership of their projects and demonstrating their ATL skills.

The UDAAN project kicked off at the start of the school year, with our young learners eagerly exploring various interests. They were encouraged to identify three areas of interest and undertake inquiries to further their passions. Our teachers and mentors provided guidance and support throughout the process, facilitating student-led inquiries that emphasized critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Next, the students were grouped and mentored based on their areas of interest. This allowed them to collaborate with like-minded peers and receive targeted guidance from mentors who were knowledgeable in their respective fields. This approach fostered a sense of community and facilitated deeper inquiry, as students were able to exchange ideas, challenge one another's thinking, and provide feedback.

Throughout the journey, the students worked tirelessly on their UDAAN projects, using a range of skills and strategies to bring their ideas to life. They conducted experiments, created prototypes, wrote reports, designed posters, and rehearsed their presentations. They also practiced reflecting on their learning and assessing their progress, honing their metacognitive skills and reinforcing their understanding of the inquiry process.

Where Dreams Take Flight: Student Showcase Extravaganza

Finally, the day of the UDAAN arrived, and our young learners were ready to share their passion projects with the world. They presented their work to an audience of parents, teachers, and peers, showcasing their creativity, knowledge, and agency. Students who selected dance and music as their passions performed in front of an audience on songs that they wrote and choreographed. Finally, our change makers choose which ways they might employ their passion to make a difference in society. Our culinary crew decided to create delectable food products and sell them to give revenue to a worthy cause. The journey has a dual purpose since it prepares students for their PYP 5 exhibition.

A showcase of imagination, innovation, and creativity at its finest: The Passion Project-UDAAN triumphs!"

In conclusion, the UDAAN was an undeniable hit, showcasing the incredible potential and impact of student-led inquiry projects. Through their dedicated research, thoughtful inquiry, and action-oriented approach, they made this UDAAN a resounding success, with visitors marveling at the quality and variety of the projects on display.

Laughter and applause echoed through the halls,

An atmosphere of inspiration, captivating all.

A day of artistic brilliance, pure and divine,

Forever etched in memory, a treasure, a sign.

The final day of UDAAN, a day so grand,

Where dreams were woven, artistry at hand.

We are proud of our young learners and excited to see where their UDAAN projects take them next.
