Embracing a Global Vision: VKE's International Mindedness Week Celebration

At VKE, we are fueled by an unwavering commitment to nurturing a passion for learning, fostering global citizenship, and cultivating an international outlook among students worldwide. Our core belief that "Education creates character" drives us to tirelessly equip our students with the essential qualities that transform them into conscientious global citizens, ready to contribute to a more harmonious and compassionate world. The recent celebration of International Mindedness (IM) Week served as an inspiring extension of this virtuous ideology, where we not only celebrated diversity but also recognized the underlying thread of shared humanity that binds us all together.

Glimpses of the International Mindedness Week celebration in different grades:

Grade 5:

During IM Week, students were encouraged to delve into the concept of international-mindedness and develop their unique understanding of what it truly means. Their reflections ranged from fundamental traits like openness, friendliness, and helpfulness to more profound insights such as adaptability, appreciation, non-judgmental attitudes, ethical decision-making, empathy, and sympathy. Through these reflections, they cleverly linked these qualities to the Learner Profile features, defining each profile through their interpretations. This introspective journey led the students to the action phase of IM Week, where they explored how their attributes aligned with the Learner Profile criteria. Consequently, they devised thoughtful action plans to improve areas in which they felt they could grow further.

The spirit of International Mindedness also found its way into various academic integrations during the week. Enthusiastic facilitators curated a captivating display showcasing the lifestyles of diverse cities in India and abroad, immersing students in a unique Unit of Inquiry (UOI) integration. Additionally, students had the opportunity to share their knowledge of diverse landforms from around the world, fostering cross-grade friendships and a sense of camaraderie through their collective appreciation of global geography.

Grade 4:

The learning environment in VKE plays a crucial role in shaping International-mindedness by fostering a culture that promotes understanding, empathy, and appreciation for diverse perspectives, cultures, and global issues. It is about fostering a sense of belonging to a larger global community and recognizing the interconnectedness of all people and cultures. During the last week, International mindedness encouraged our champions of PYP4 to be curious and open-minded about the world around them. It fostered a desire to inquire into global issues and to understand different perspectives through different learning experiences. It involved cultivating respect and empathy for others, regardless of their cultural background, beliefs, or values. Students were inspired to put themselves in others' shoes to better understand their experiences and emotions. It stimulated them to understand the impact of their actions on the planet and to develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment and sustainable practices. It also emphasized the importance of learning and valuing multiple languages, which helped students connect with people from various linguistic backgrounds. It empowered them to take an active role in shaping a better world through their actions, attitudes, and understanding of the multidimensional and interconnected global issues we face. International Mindedness Week has been a transformative experience for our community, shaping us into more compassionate, knowledgeable, and empathetic individuals ready to make a positive impact on the world.

Grade 2:

What is culture? In the Unit of Inquiry (UOI) integration, students enthusiastically curated an engaging display showcasing the lifestyle of people in India and abroad. Students reflected on the importance of connecting with others, we must first understand ourselves. Other people's viewpoints, cultures, and languages must be respected and understood. Students discussed international-mindedness, which is defined as intercultural understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures, which leads to harmony.

Grade 1 :

International mindedness refers to an individual's ability to think and act with a global perspective, considering and respecting the diversity of cultures, viewpoints, and values around the world.

Embracing Diversity: In our grade PYP1 students introduced themselves through a song that showcased Cross-Cultural Communication. It promoted effective communication and interaction with people from various cultural backgrounds. Cultural awareness helped students navigate cultural differences and communicate in a respectful and understanding manner. Students also brought objects, artefacts, or symbols that represent their own culture or heritage. They got an opportunity to share and explain these items to their peers. This activity helped to create a sense of pride while also promoting curiosity about different cultural backgrounds.

Unveiling Worlds: The Power of Stories to Shape Hearts and Minds:

We introduced diverse stories and books that showcase different cultures, traditions, and values during reading time. We encouraged discussions and asked open-ended questions to help students reflect on the experiences and perspectives shared in the stories. We also had a discussion on attributes of the learner profile through stories. Reflecting on characters' journeys and transformations encouraged our young learners to reflect on their own development and aspirations.

Beyond the Dot: The Power of Simple Exercises for Mindfulness and Creativity :

The learning engagement encouraged our champions to concentrate on a single point, promoting focus and mindfulness. Students demonstrated how a small dot could draw attention, illustrating the importance of seeing beyond the obvious and considering different viewpoints.

Sr. KG:

International mindedness in early years education involves fostering a multicultural and inclusive environment where young learners are exposed to diverse cultures, languages, and perspectives. At EYP (Early Years Programme) our educators facilitated children about the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, regardless of their cultural or social background. We introduced the attributes of learner profiles through stories, songs, and various activities. Such engagements will help them grow into kind and caring individuals who will understand and appreciate others, be open-minded, and caring citizens of the world.

During International Mindedness Week at VKE we aimed to instil a sense of global awareness and appreciation for diverse cultures among our little learners. Through various engaging activities, we encourage our students to explore both the similarities and differences that exist among people worldwide.

To promote the learner profile of "caring," we emphasised the significance of respecting and taking care of other cultures and individuals from different backgrounds. Our dedicated educators facilitated discussions and activities that encouraged our young learners to consider ways they can be more empathetic and open-minded towards others.

As part of the festivities, we were delighted to host parents from various nationalities, who kindly volunteered to represent their countries. These parents shared insightful presentations about their home countries, showcasing unique aspects such as traditional attire, delectable cuisines, and rich cultural practices. The active participation of our parent community played a vital role in enriching our students' understanding of global diversity.

The little learners were captivated by the vivid imagery displayed for each country, providing them with a visual journey across the globe. This immersive experience sparked their curiosity and helped them appreciate the beauty and richness of cultures worldwide.

International Mindedness Week, served as an enriching and transformative experience for our students, fostering open-mindedness, acceptance, and a profound respect for the global community. By nurturing such values at an early age, we aim to shape compassionate and responsible global citizens for a more interconnected world.

As we conclude this enriching IM Week celebration, we are reminded of the immense potential within each of our students to embrace diversity, act with compassion, and think beyond borders. Together, they form a unified force, bound by a shared commitment to making the world a better and more peaceful place. With International Mindedness deeply ingrained in their characters, these young minds are set to embark on a journey of impactful learning and responsible global citizenship, creating a brighter future for themselves and generations to come.
